Varanus salvator “komaini”

Location: komaini has a very restricted distribution, occurring only in a small area between Thailand and Malaysia.
Size: female: 120/160cm males: 140/180cm
Description: A true komaini is a fully black water monitor 120cm to a maximum of 180cm with a gray belly and blue tongue. The black skin has a blue glow. (as stated in: Morphological Studies on the Systematics of South EastAsian Water Monitors (Varanus salvator Complex): Nominotypic Populations and Taxonomic Overview by André Koch, Mark Auliya, Andreas Schmitz, Ulrich Kuch & Wolfgang Böhme.) There are many melanistic mutations in the wild from every Varanus salvator species, but those often have red tongue, yellow belly and a brownish glow. Those are just a mutation. Komaini has become a species on their own. Most komaini in the hobby are not real komaini but melanistic Varanus salvator.

New studies say komaini is a locality of macromaculatus who mutaded to melanistic monitors in a smal location. Still it is a very small area only this type of monitor comes from. Locals say there are probably only a 100+/- left in that area because of people catching them and eating them or selling them to the pet trade.
